Joe Gibbs Career
Gibbs began his career with a stint as offensive line coach at San Diego State between 1964 and 1966 under Don Coryell. He would go on to hold the same position under Bill Peterson at Florida State between 1967 and 1968. Also between 1971 and 1972, he serves under Frank Broyles at Arkansas.
Gibbs was later hired as the offensive backfield coach for the St. Louis Cardinals (1973–1977) under coach Don Coryell. In 1978 he worked as offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under coach McKay. He eventually rejoined coach Don Coryell with the San Diego Chargers (1979–1980).

In 1992, Joe created his NASCAR team, Joe Gibbs Racing, a year after he retired from the NFL. Dale Jarrett was the first driver for Joe’s team between 1992-1994 with the sponsor Interstate Batteries, and the number 18.

In both 1997 and 1998, McClenathan finished 2nd in NHRA Winston Top Fuel points with Joe. In 1997, McClenathan had gone on a hot streak, sweeping the famed Western Swing (Denver, Sonoma, Seattle) and a total of 4 wins in a row, 5 in 6 races since Denver, including a final round at the U.S. Nationals in ’97.
He also went on and took Joe’s MBNA Top Fuel Dragster to a $200,000 payday, winning the 2000 NHRA Winston No-Bull Showdown, pitting Top Fuel Dragsters against Funny Cars in a 24-car shootout.
