Resch was born on July 10, 1948, in Moose Jaw, Canada. He grew up in a hockey-loving family and began playing the game at a young age. Resch was a talented goaltender and played for the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs from 1967 to 1971. While at UMD, he earned a degree in education.

After graduating from UMD, Resch turned professional. He played for several minor league teams before making his NHL debut with the New York Islanders in 1973. Resch had a successful NHL career and won a Stanley Cup with the Islanders in 1980. He retired from the NHL in 1987.

Career

Resch is a former professional ice hockey goaltender and television sportscaster. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1973 to 1987 and won a Stanley Cup with the New York Islanders in 1979–80. Resch began his career with the Muskegon Mohawks of the International Hockey League (IHL) in 1970–71. Resch spent the next seven seasons with the Islanders, forming a successful tandem with Billy Smith.

During this time, the Islanders won four consecutive Stanley Cup championships from 1980 to 1983. Resch was named to the NHL Second All-Star Team in 1979–80 and won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 1981–82 for perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. In 1981, Resch was traded to the Colorado Rockies.

He spent two seasons with the Rockies, before being traded to the New Jersey Devils in 1983. Resch played his final four seasons with the Devils, retiring from the NHL in 1987. After retiring from playing, Resch worked as a general manager for the Kingston Canadians of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He also served as an assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils and Ottawa Senators of the NHL.
