He was brought up in Buffalo, New York, and graduated from Kenmore West Senior High School. He also acquired a Bachelor of Arts in History from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1970.

Also, in 1992, Blitzer became CNN’s White House correspondent, a position he would hold until 1999. During this period, he gained an Emmy Award for his coverage of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, and in 1998, he started hosting the CNN Sunday morning interview program Late Edition with Blitzer, which was seen in over 180 countries.
