Nimrod Taabu Citizen TV
Nimrod had never thought that he would become an on-screen personality. He states in his biography that as he was growing up, he looked up to his father and had no idea what he wanted to be. “I think that was a big mistake on my part not knowing what to do in life,” he said.
His first choice was the hotel industry, and he applied for admission at Utalii College, where during those times, Utalii was not easy so he went back to the farm and spent more than a year, farming with his father. It was during then that good news hit him — one of his relatives told him to apply for admission to a Mass Communication school, which he did and is where he is today.
His career as a journalist began in 2000 when he was working for The Standard newspaper as an assistant reporter and later became a news anchor and reporter for KTN, that same year, for four years. At KTN he came up with a weekly Swahili News Round-up Programme for the Mombassa audience that eventually led to the establishment of a successful Swahili News Bulletin.
He then moved to NTV as a senior anchor and reporter in the Editorial department, where he co-hosted a show with Jane Ngoiri before ditching the Kimathi Street-based station for Citizen TV in 2018. Taabu explained that he majored in Kiswahili because of his interests as well as a strict upbringing that cemented his mastery of the language.
“Growing up we used to be punished for getting a Swahili word wrong by our parents. All through school I scored A’s in Swahili. Moreover, I’m more comfortable speaking Kiswahili than English.
“I had to learn English after I was told that if I was to get a job and survive in Nairobi I had to be able to speak it well,” he added.
On June 22, 2018, Nimrod was announced to be quitting NTV for Citizen TV as Kanze Dena’s replacement following her appointment by President Uhuru Kenyatta as the Deputy State House Spokesperson.
Before he left the station, Taabu tweeted while responding to her former co-anchor Jane Ngoiri, Nimrod said that he never thought he would want to work with a colleague forever until he met Jane Ngoiri. Ngoiri, on the other hand, took to social media to pen down an emotional goodbye note him:
“What an emotional day it has been. I can feel the void in my heart. I still have tears in my eyes…errr balancing tears is no joke. I never thought a day would come to say Goodbye. Nimrod Taabu has to be more than a colleague, a Best Friend.
When I joined NTV in 2012, I was starstruck by this guy who I watched and always wanted to do News with…and when I met him…we just clicked. Our chemistry on the TV attracted eyeballs, we connected with viewers, and it has always been fun working with NT. Nimrod Taabu; May the Almighty God Bless you in this New Chapter of your Life.”
