Her first professional film was as Ariel in the Broadway revival, The Tempest. Later on, Aunjanue got the role in the drama series, New York Undercover. Ellis had the co-leading role in the film, Girls Town, in 1996 alongside Lili Taylor. Ellis has continued to have several roles in different movies and Television shows.
In 2014, Ellis was cast as a lead character in the international co-production epic miniseries The Book of Negroes, based on Lawrence Hill’s bestselling 2007 novel. The Book of Negroes premiered in 2015, and Ellis received critical acclaim for her performance.
