Spence attended and graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1949 and from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1952. He was also first in his class. He was granted an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in May 1990.
He began his career in Riverton, Wyoming, and subsequently became a successful defense attorney for the insurance industry, winning many cases. Years later, Spence said he “saw the light” and became determined to describe people rather of corporations, insurance companies, banks, or “big business.”
