Arthur Rock Career

Arthur started his career in the year 1951. He worked as a securities analyst in New York City. He later joined the corporate finance department of Hayden, Stone & Company in New York. There he focused on raising money for small high-technology companies. In the year 1957, (when the “traitorous eight” left Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory), Arthur was the one who helped them find a place to go. He did convince Sherman Fairchild to start Fairchild Semiconductor. Rock moved to California, in the year 1961. formed the San Francisco venture capital firm Davis & Rock alongside Tomas J. Davis, Jr., Rock. He was as well a member of Apple Inc.’s board (when Steve Jobs was ousted in the 1980s0. He donated  $25 million to the Harvard Business School. The money was to establish the Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship.

Arthur Rock Invented the Term ‘Venture Capital’

Rock joined the Wall Street firm of Hayden Stone & Co. after graduating from Harvard. He used to work as a securities analyst in the investment banking department. He underwrote new stock issues. Rock was quite successful at picking applied science stocks in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore who are both entrepreneurs in the year 1956, helped William Shockley who us the investors of the transistor to set up Shockley Semiconductor Laboratories. Fed up with William’s difficult temperament eight engineers walked out on him. They (“traitorous eight,”) wanted to set up their own transistor company. They, however, needed investors. Among the eight traitorous, there was one who has a father with an account at Hayden Stone. He mentioned his son’s predicament to someone at the investment banking firm. Later, a partner at the firm and Rock flew to California. They met with the eight men and agreed to find the financing for their venture. It took Arthur 35 tries before he found a company that would supply the money they needed. Fairchild Camera and Instrument (a company in Syosset, New York), put up $1.5 million in return for the right to buy the new company for $3 million if it succeeded. Fairchild Camera and Instrument called Fairchild Semiconductor and succeded. Some years later, around two Fairchild bought out the founders for $250,000 in Fairchild stock, worth $1.35 million in 1997. Arthur and Hayden Stone got involved with Teledyne soon after the company’s founding in 1960 by Henry E. Singleton. Rock then became a member of the executive committee. Singleton found Arthur to be “extremely brainy, perceptive, quick to grasp the essentials and reach a conclusion. Rock set up a business alongside Thomas J. Davis, Jr. Thomas J. Davis, Jr was his general partner. In order to fund the business, Arthur assembled capital of $3.5 million from 25 limited partners who included Fayez Sarofim, a Harvard classmate, and Henry E. Singleton. Davis & Rock existed for 7 years thus from 1961 to 1968. It was the first limited venture capital partnership. The company invested in 15 companies, including Scientific Data Systems (SDS), founded by the mathematician Max Palevsky, Anadex Instruments, Inc., Benrus Watch Co., General Capacitor,  Teledyne, Astrodata as well as Benrus Watch Co., The company put $257,000 into SDS. The investment did rise in value to $60 million. The sales went from $1 million to $100 million. The success of SDS made Rock become popular. He gained a good reputation as a great prognosticator of high-tech companies in which to invest. In the year 1969, SDS was acquired by Xerox Corporation. In 1970 Arthur’s share of Xerox stock was worth $4.6 million. He does not have a technical background. Despite him not having a technical background, he chose SDS because he had confidence in Palevsky’s drive to succeed.
