Ovitz was born on December 14, 1946, to a Romanian-Jewish family in Chicago, Illinois, as the son of a liquor wholesaler. Brought up in Encino, California, he was student body president at Birmingham High School in Van Nuys, a classmate of Michael Milken and Sally Field. While a pre-med student at the University of California, Los Angeles, and president of Zeta Beta Tau, Ovitz started his entertainment career as a part-time tour guide at Universal Studios.
Ovitz secured a job in the mailroom at the William Morris Agency upon graduating from UCLA, in 1968, with a degree in theater, film, and television. From there, he left for law school but returned momentarily (something William Morris normally did not allow).
Ovitz gained fame in 1975 when he joined with four other Morris agents to form the Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Thanks to Ovitz’s knack for hustling up clients, CAA was quickly changed into arguably the most famous talent agency, and Ovitz became known as the most powerful man in Hollywood.
