Bana was born on August 9, 1968, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He was raised in Melbourne’s Tullamarine, a suburban area, as a Catholic and attended Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School. Bana started doing impressions of family members at the age of six or seven, first imitating his grandfather’s mannerisms, walk, and voice.
In school, he imitated his teachers to get out of trouble. As a teen, Bana watched the Mel Gibson movie Mad Max and decided he desired to become an actor. Nevertheless, he did not seriously think of a job in the performing arts until 1991, when he was convinced to try comedy while working as a barman at Melbourne’s Castle Hotel.

Bana started his profession in the sketch comedy series Full Frontal before gaining notice in the comedy-drama The Castle (1997). He achieved critical recognition for starring in the biographical crime movie Chopper (2000) and as the supposed character in Hulk (2003).
