Leo Sayer Biography

Leo Sayer is an English-Australian singer-songwriter musician and entertainer. His career has spanned four decades. An Australian citizen and resident.

10 Quick Facts About Leo Sayer

    1. Name: Leo Sayer
    2. Age: 73 years
    3. Birthday: May 21
    4. Zodiac Sign: Gemini
    5. Height: Not Known

    7. Occupation: Singer-Songwriter Musician and Entertainer
    8. Marital Status: Single

    10. Net worth:$275 million

Leo had a string of highly polished mainstream pop hits in the late ’70s. He began his musical career as the leader of the London-based Terraplane Blues Band in the late ’60s. Leo formed Patches with drummer Dave Courtney in 1971. Courtney had previously played with British pop star Adam Faith. Adam was starting a management career in the early ’70s. So Courtney brought Patches to his former employer in hopes of securing a contract. However, Patches failed to impress Faith, yet he liked Sayer and chose to promote him as a solo artist.

Leo Sayer Age

Sayer was born Gerard Hugh Sayer on May 21, 1948, in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, England. As of 2021, he is 73 years old.

Leo Sayer Family

Sayer was born to Thomas E G Sayer, an English father and Theresa Nolan, an Irish mother. He attended St Peter’s Catholic Primary School. Leo was the second child of three siblings – Michael, b. 1939, and Brian b. 1951. Sayer later attended Blessed Robert Southwell (now Chatsmore) in Goring-by-Sea. Before studying commercial art and graphic design at West Sussex College of Art and Design in Worthing, Sussex. Leo Sayer Leo’s family has a history of cancer; both his parents died of cancer, as did other family members on both sides. A scare came on his 65th birthday, after experiencing intestinal problems, Sayer was given a colonoscopy which revealed he had intestinal ulcers and a tumor. Sayer underwent surgery which successfully treated both problems and said that the tumor was benign. Leo was initially discovered by musician David Courtney, who then co-managed and co-produced him with former pop singer turned manager, Adam Faith. January 1967, while 18-year-old Sayer was working as a hall porter at the King’s Hotel in Hove, he assisted in the rescue of elderly guests from a serious fire that damaged the first floor of the hotel. Sayer himself was rescued from the blazing hotel by builders working on a block of flats beside the hotel.

Leo Sayer Wife| Divoece| Children| Relationship

Leo and his wife Janice married in 1973 and divorced in 1985. Sayer then had a relationship with Donatella Piccinetti, with whom he moved to live in Australia, but they separated in 2007.

Leo Sayer Early Career

Leo began recording some solo material written with David Courtney at Roger Daltrey’s studio; the Who’s lead singer liked the Sayer/Courtney originals enough to record a handful himself, including the hit “Giving It All Away.” His debut single, Why Is Everybody Going Home, failed to have an impact. Yet 1973’s The Show Must Go On hit number one in the U.K. A cover by Three Dog Night stopped Sayer’s version from charting in the U.S. Silver Bird, followed quickly by Just a Boy. It included two more British hit singles, One Man Band and Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance). Long Tall Glasses managed to break Sayer into the American Top Ten in early 1975. Leo’s working relationship with Courtney was severed during the recording of his third album, Another Year (1975). The following year, he released Endless Flight, which was co-written with former Supertramp member Frank Farrell. It was featuring the number-one singles You Make Me Feel like Dancing and When I Need You. The record became his biggest hit in both the U.S. and the U.K., selling over a million copies in America.

Leo Sayer In America Chart

Endless Flight made Sayer become a fixture in the American Top 40, yet his hits began to dry up in England. Leo began the ’80s with the American number two hit More Than I Can Say. Sadly, it was his last big single in the U.S. Leo’s last chart entry in America was early 1981 hit Living in a Fantasy. However, the U.K. hits didn’t stop until 1983. After Til You Come Back to Me scraped the charts. Then after lying low for the rest of the decade, Leo attempted a comeback in 1990 with Cool Touch but it fell on deaf ears. Leo spent much of the ’90s entangled in lawsuits, but he re-emerged as a touring act toward the end of the decade. Notably, the 1999 album Live in London captures this effort.

Leo Sayer Comeback

Leo’s real comeback arrived in 2006 when DJ Meck remixed Thunder in My Heart. It became a smash, reaching number one on the U.K. charts. Thus this sparked a Sayer revival that was accompanied by hits compilations and an appearance on Celebrity Big Brother in 2007. Leo emigrated to Australia in 2005. Becoming a full citizen in 2009. Precisely, in January 2009, at the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony in Canberra. Leo’s new home saw the release of Don’t Wait Until Tomorrow in 2008. It was the only country where the record was released. Leo worked in Australian film ads and television, while also touring regularly. Then Restless Years, a collection of new material, appeared in 2015, followed by Selfie in 2019.

Leo Sayer Health Problems

Leo is dyslexic. Sayer still suffers from the effects of injuries to his legs and ankles that were caused by a fall off a stage in 1977.
