Ryne Sandberg was born on September 18, 1959, in Spokane, Washington. He grew up in the Spokane area and developed a passion for baseball at a young age. Sandberg attended North Central High School in Spokane, where he excelled in both baseball and football.
After graduating from high school in 1978, Sandberg was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball draft. However, he chose not to sign with the Phillies and instead decided to attend college. Sandberg enrolled at Spokane Falls Community College, where he continued to play baseball and improve his skills.
After spending two years at Spokane Falls Community College, Sandberg transferred to the University of Arizona. He played college baseball for the Arizona Wildcats and had a successful career there. In 1980, he was named an All-American and helped lead the Wildcats to the College World Series.
