- Taff was born on November 11, 1953, in Farmersville, California. He was the fourth of five sons born to Joe and Ann Taff. His father was a pastor of a small Pentecostal church and a machinist, while his mother was a field worker who picked fruit and chopped cotton.
- Some of his earliest memories are of being held in the church by his mum while he sang with the congregation. When Taff moved to Arkansas in his teens, he started listening to popular music for the first time in his life and found inspiration there, too.

- Taff first gained recognition as lead vocalist for the Imperials (1976–81). Among his best-known performances is the song “Praise the Lord”.
