McGinley first appeared as a supporting character actor which made him popular thus turning him into an acting scout while working as John Turturro’s understudy in John Patrick Shanley’s 1984 production of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. He was accepted to play the role of Seargent Red O’Neill in the Oscar-winning Platoon in 1986.

His first film to be cast was when he played the role of Alan Alda’s Sweet Liberty earlier in 1986. From there he worked continually throughout the 1990s where he appeared in films such as Point Break in 1991 and Article 99 among others.
