After an injury to Bears starter Rex Grossman, he was pressed into service as the starting quarterback during his rookie year, starting the first 14 games of the year 2005 season, but was replaced by Grossman for the playoffs that year.
  • He did not play at all in the year 2006, and sparingly in the year 2007. He regained his starting job from Grossman in the year 2008, but the team finished a disappointing 9–7 and out of the playoffs. In the offseason of that year, he was traded to the Denver Broncos.

ESPN announced on February 5. 2015 Davis signed a multi-year contract with the network through 2021 that included taking over as host of the College GameDay football roadshow in 2015 for Chris Fowler, who was a host for the show since 1990. The deal also saw Davis discontinue his ESPN College Football Thursday Primetime duties but continue his weekly basketball play-by-play role.

He said of his work at ESPN, “I don’t think of my job as being hard. I know I’m the luckiest guy around. I get to watch basketball and talk about it. When you never feel as if you go to work, it’s really easy and fun to do the homework.
