Bergey was born on February 9, 1945, in South Dayton, New York. He attended Pine Valley Central High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. Bergey was a two-time all-state football player in high school. After high school, Bergey attended Arkansas State University, where he played football for the Indians. He was a three-time all-conference selection and was named a consensus All-American in 1968.
Bergey set several school records at Arkansas State, including most tackles in a season and most career tackles. Bergey graduated from Arkansas State in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 1969 NFL Draft.

Career
Bergey was acquired by the American Football League’s Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 1969 NFL Draft and was an AFL All-Star in his first year with two interceptions. For his efforts as a rookie, he was named the AFL Defensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press, the final selections made for the AFL as a league before the merger.
Bergey recorded three interceptions in the 1970 season, the first for the team in the NFL; the Bengals made the postseason that year, but Bergey did not record a statistic. He recorded a fumble healing to go with an unofficial “sack”. He established an interception in his next two combined seasons. In his absolute season with Cincinnati in 1973, he had three interceptions and recovered three fumbles.
