Otis Williams Temptations
When a teenager, Otis Miles, Jr. became interested in music and adopted the maiden name of his mother for his stage name, and as Otis Williams put together a variety of singing groups. Williams and the Siberians, the El Domingoes, and the Distants were among those groups. In 1959, The Distants scored a local hit with Richard Street’s lead vocals, co-written by Williams and their manager/producer Johnnie Mae Matthews, entitled “Come On”
Later Distants recordings weren’t as good and Williams and his friends/bandmates Elbridge “Al” Bryant and Melvin Franklin left the Distants after an offer from Motown Records’ Berry Gordy. Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams of The Primes later joined Williams, Bryant, and Franklin to form The Elgins, who signed “The Temptations” to Motown in March 1961.
During the span of nearly five decades, The Temptations were one of the most influential acts in soul music, during which singers such as David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards, former Distant Richard Street, Damon Harris, Ron Tyson, Ali-Ollie Woodson, Theo Peoples, Ray Davis, and former Spinners singer G.C. Cameron have all been members.
The group’s lineup changes were so frequent, stressful, and troubled that Williams and Melvin Franklin promised each other that they would never leave the group. Franklin stayed in the group until 1994 when he became physically unable to continue. On 23 February 1995, Franklin died, leaving Williams, then 53, as the last surviving original member of the quintet.
Williams is the co-author of Temptations, with Patricia Romanowski, a book from 1988 which served as both his autobiography and the group’s history. Ten years later, the novel was adapted into The Temptations, an NBC television miniseries. Williams was portrayed by actor Charles Malik Whitfield.
In 1989 Williams was inducted as a member of The Temptations into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In May 2006, Williams received an Honorary Doctorate from Stillman University.
