Grant made her professional stage debut as an undergraduate in Oklahoma in 1944. In 1948, she made her Broadway debut in Joy to the World. Lee established herself as a dramatic method actress on and off-Broadway, receiving recognition for her role as a shoplifter in Detective Story in 1949.

Grant’s first significant Broadway appearance, at 22, was in “Detective Story,” a small part of a shoplifter described in the script as being 40 years old. He picked up her accent and style from the people he met on the train.
Two years later, she made her film debut in the film version (Detective Story), starring Kirk Douglas, thereby earning her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress Nomination, and winning the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
She said that she enjoyed working with director William Wyler, who helped guide her. Lee has been banned from working in Hollywood. And that ban lasted 12 years.
