Education and Music Beginning

Randy dropped out of high school while he was in the ninth grade, however, he went back and later graduated from Fort Payne High in 1969. After graduating from Fort Payne, he went to Jacksonville State University.

In the late 60s, Owen and his cousin, Teddy Gentry, began playing music together. They recruited another cousin, Jeff Cook, to form a band, which they named Wild country. Their debut public performance was at a high school talent show, which they won.

When he graduated from Jacksonville State University, the three cousins relocated into an apartment in Anniston, Alabama and by 1973, they were pursuing a full-time music career. For more than 2 decades, Randy was the frontman and the lead vocalist of one of the most prolific bands in the history of music.

The band now called Alabama, signed a recording deal with RCA Records in 1980 and in May 2002, the band announced their music retirement during the Academy of Country Music Awards telecast. For the remainder of 2002 and 2003, they did shows throughout the country in their American Farewell Tour.

Randy and the Alabama Band mates received Country Music’s highest honor in November 2005, being inducted into The Country Music Hall of Fame. The Eagles, Anne Murray, and Ronnie Milsap.

Before and throughout his early music career, Randy got jobs for laying brick, painting, farming, and hanging sheetrock. He says his long-range goals are “To help my family achieve a gentle way of living and to be known as friendly to the fans and have a good reputation with fellow musicians.”

Randy Owen Cancer

Randy’s prostate cancer was found after a blood test during a regular checkup indicated that his prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels were elevated. “When they told me that I had cancer, it was devastating,” he admits. “My whole world stopped. Cancer is a scary thing. It is a scary, scary word when it’s said about you.”

But Randy soon learned that since his cancer was caught early, it was highly treatable. He underwent high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), a treatment currently in clinical trials that uses high-energy sound waves to destroy cancer cells.
