He was a two-time all-state selection in football and was named the Mississippi Player of the Year in 1981. Coleman obtained a scholarship to play football at Alcorn State University.
He was a four-year starter at Alcorn State and was named to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) All-Conference team three times. He was also a two-time All-American selection. Coleman graduated from Alcorn State in 1985 with a degree in physical education. He was drafted by the New York Giants in the fifth round of the 1985 NFL Draft.

He was drafted by the Giants in the 12th round (316th overall) of the 1987 NFL Draft. Coleman played college football at Alcorn State University, where he was a two-time All-SWAC selection.
