In 2016, Rebecca was proud to be able to tell the story of Charles Nelson. He is a 100-percent service-connected disabled veteran from Leander. Charles was battling the VA to get them to pay for his living donor transplant through the VA Choice Program.
The VA denied coverage because the living donor, his son Coty, was not a veteran. This forced the family to use Medicare to pay for life-saving surgery.
Rebecca’s coverage got the attention of U.S. Senator John Cornyn of Texas and U.S. Representative John Carter of Texas. He introduced twin bills (Veterans Transplant Coverage Act) in the Senate and House.
The legislation, which is still pending, clarifies the Choice Act. It directs the VA to use the program to pay for living donor transplants at participating transplant centers.
