He went to Stanford University, where he grew interested in drama during his second year. In 1972, Danson transferred to Carnegie-Mellon University, which was once known as Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh.

Danson met actress Whoopi Goldberg in late 1988 while a guest on The Arsenio Hall Show. The two became friends later co-hosting Help Save Planet Earth in 1990. In April 1992, while making the film Made in America the two became romantically involved.
