She attended and graduated from Cloquet High School. She then received a scholarship to study art and photography at the University of Minnesota.

However, Lange dropped out of college in 1970 to pursue a more bohemian lifestyle, traveling through the United States and Mexico in a microbus with her spouse Paco Grande, whom she met at the University of Minnesota. The couple then moved to Paris, where Lange studied mime theater under the supervision of Étienne Decroux and entered the Opéra-Comique as a dancer.
