Verlander attended the Richmond Baseball Academy in his childhood days. He proved to be talented even at such a young age, he threw his fastball 84 mph (135 km/h) a few days after joining the academy. His velocity elevated at 86 mph (138 km/h) in his senior year at Goochland High School, during which he was sidetracked by strep throat. For his college studies, Verlander enrolled at Old Dominion University.

Verlander’s momentum reached 87 mph (140 km/h) while still in his first year at Old Dominion. He played for the Old Dominion University baseball team for three years.  Justin struck out a then-school record 17 batters against James Madison on May 17, 2002. 

He broke his record and set a new Colonial Athletic Association record in 2004, with 151 strikeouts. During his three years, he averaged 11.5 strikeouts, and his career collegiate run average (ERA) was 2.57.

Verlander began his professional baseball career when the Detroit Tigers listed him second overall in the 2004 MLB Draft.
