He has moved to his research focus to develop approaches to prevent HIV transmission. A protective vaccine against HIV remains unavailable despite concerted research efforts. However, he has been leading non-vaccine approaches to block HIV transmission that has shown considerable promise. His group was the primary to indicate the protective efficacy of a long-acting antiretroviral drug as pre-exposure prophylaxis in rhesus macaques. One such agent, cabotegravir, has been progressed into Phase-3 efficacy trials in high-risk populations, in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline.Dr. Ho’s group has also engineered exquisitely powerful antibodies that neutralize divergent strains of HIV. The most encouraging neutralizing agent is a bispecific monoclonal antibody that entered a first-in-human clinical trial in 2019 with the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.Dr. David Ho Lab
David D. Ho has been researching and advancing therapies against viral diseases for nearly 40 years, and has been committed to AIDS research since the beginning of the epidemic. The Ho lab originally concentrated on clinical virology, HIV-1 pathogenesis, and HIV-1 treatment, and assisted to explain the dynamics of HIV-1 replication in vivo and the turnover acceleration of CD4 T cells. Moreover, they led the effort in developing and testing combination antiretroviral therapy that for the first time showed long-lasting control of HIV-1 replication in patients. The Ho lab then concentrated on the development of novel vaccines against HIV-1, both in the laboratory and in the clinic. The lab’s first two candidate vaccines were ADMVA, a multigenic clade C/B’ vaccine-based vaccine, and ADVAX, a DNA-based multigenic clade C/B’ DNA utilizing the Modified Vaccinia Ankara virus. These vaccines have finished Phase 1 clinical testing.Dr. David Ho Awards
