He released his self-titled debut album in 1983, which included the hit single “Super Love.” In 1988, Gill joined the R&B/pop group New Edition, replacing Bobby Brown. He recorded two albums with the group, Heartbreak (1988) and Home Again (1996).

He also continued his solo career, releasing his second album, Chemistry, in 1985. His third solo album, Johnny Gill, was released in 1990 and was a commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard R&B Albums chart and number four on the Billboard 200 chart.
