Curtis attended Seven Hills School through the eighth grade, afterward attending high school at Groton School, a boarding school in Groton, Massachusetts, graduating in 1993. She bested Seventeen magazine’s fiction competition the summer prior to her senior year in 1992. Sittenfeld also studied at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, prior to moving to Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.
She pursued creative writing, authored articles for the college newspaper, and revised that paper’s weekly arts magazine. She was furthermore chosen as one of Glamourʼs College Women of the Year. She went on to earn an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa.
