Tucker made her première with Mel Tillis, who was so touched by her talent that he requested her onstage to perform. In 1969, her family moved to Las Vegas, where she frequently performed. She recorded a demonstration tape that won the attention of songwriter Dolores Fuller, who gave it to producer Billy Sherrill, the head of artists and repertoire at CBS Records.
When producer Billy Sherrill got a demo tape of Tucker, he immediately signed her to a record deal at Columbia Records.
