Kmetko was born on February 16, 1953, in Cleveland, Ohio as the fifth of Rev. Andrew and Alice Gladys (née Newman) Kmetko’s five kids. In 1970, He graduated from William Howard Taft High School in Chicago, Illinois. Kmetko earned a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from Columbia College Chicago in 1976.

Kmetko started his journalism career as a weekend anchor and general assignment reporter for popular television station WAVE-TV in Louisville, Kentucky, and WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Moreover, His popularity increased in 1982, when Kmetko was employed as a general assignment reporter by CBS’s Los Angeles affiliate KCBS, subsequently moving to a four-day-a-week schedule as an entertainment correspondent at that station, where he traveled around the world to film movies and attended film festivals.
In 1994, Kmetko was employed as co-anchor of the entertainment shows E! News Weekend E! and News Daily where he covered the Cannes Film Festival, Academy Awards, and Golden Globes, among other high-profile events. Furthermore, on October 4, 2005, Kmetko hosted the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association’s Excellence in Journalism Awards at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, California.
