But Laura Wright and Frank Valentini were resolute that if anyone should be playing Nelle it ought to be Lanier, so the storyline was required to be postponed for her. In 2016, she came back to General Hospital, however this time in a brand new contract role of Nelle Hayes.

On June 28, 2018, Daytime Confidential announced that Lanier decided chose not to restore her contract with General Hospital. Lanier repeated her General Hospital role briefly in October 2018. She will repeat the role of Nelle Benson the week of June 10, 2019, at General Hospital.
