The Gabby Douglas Story
The Gabby Douglas Story is a story about a young American gymnast who overcame obstacles to become an Olympic champion. The film contains no drinking, smoking, sex, or cursing, though there is a small amount of mean-girl talk at the gym and Gabby can be harsh on herself when evaluating her abilities.
Gabby is depicted as a hard-working as well as determined individual who won’t let poverty, as well as illness, stop her from reaching her goals. She is a member of a close-knit family headed by a single mom, who leaves Gabby’s dad because he can not find a job.
Gabby herself then moves from her family in the year 2010 as a young teen to train along with a particular coach; parents may question whether they agree with that decision. Otherwise, this is a squeaky-clean sports film that youthful athletes, particularly gymnasts, may draw inspiration from. Gabby Douglas was selected to compete with the U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics team at the 2012 Summer Olympics. There, Douglas became the first African American to win gold in the individual all-around event.
Gabby Douglas Gymnastics
Douglas started training in gymnastics at age six when her older sister convinced their mother to enroll her in gymnastics classes. Douglas started her training at Gymstrada in October 2002. When she was8 years old, Douglas won the Level 4 all-around gymnastics title at the year 2004 Virginia State Championships.
Gabby relocated to Des Moines, Iowa, to train full-time with coach Liang Chow at 14 years old. Because her family had to stay in Virginia while her siblings completed school, Gabby lived alongside Travis and Missy Parton and their four daughters, one of them also trained at Chow’s gym.
Douglas belongs to a Christian religion; she said, “I believe in God. He is the secret of my success. He gives people talent”, and “… I love sharing my faith. God has given me this amazing God-given talent, so I’m going to go out and glorify His name.” Douglas has also stated in her biography that in the past her “family practiced some Jewish traditions”, including attending a Conservative Jewish synagogue, keeping kosher as well as celebrating Hanukah.
Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles
Douglas assisted the USA to win gold in the team competition and also placed 4th all-around behind defending World Champion Simone Biles, newcomer Bailie Key as well as Olympic teammate Aly Raisman in March 2015.
Douglas finished at the U.S. Classic and completed second in the all-around behind 2-time World All-Around Champion Simone Biles and ahead of Maggie Nichols with a score of 60,500. She had a consistent night hitting clean routines. She placed second on uneven bars behind Madison Kocian and ahead of Bailie Key with a score of 15.400, third on balance beam behind Biles and Olympic teammate Aly Raisman with a score of 14.900, and second on floor exercise behind Biles and ahead of Key and Nichols with a score of 15,000.
On August 13 and 15, Douglas competed at the P&G Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she placed 5th overall with a score of 117.950, placing behind Simone Biles, Maggie Nichols, Aly Raisman, and Bailie Key.
Gabby Douglas Hair
Douglas revealed all the hair damage she suffered as a result of doing gymnastics. She shared a photo of herself with her natural hair as well as talked about the emotional journey she has been on with her hair over the past several years.
“From the heart,” she started her candid Instagram post. “From a very young age I always had to put my hair in a tight ponytail to do gymnastics and due to that my hair became completely damaged. I had bald spots on the back of my head.
I was so embarrassed and self-conscious that I put a bunch of clips over the spots to try and cover them up, but it was still noticeable. My hair grew a little, but shortly after, I had to cut all of my hair off because it was so damaged.”
She said she“cried and cried and cried” about her struggles with her hair and also talked about how hard it was when people criticized her hair during the Olympics instead of focusing on her athletic abilities.
“Most days I didn’t even want to go to the gym because I felt so embarrassed that all my hair was gone,” she wrote. “I used to think: why can’t I have healthy hair? despite yet another challenge, I kept going. fast forward to the both Olympics and my hair was the topic of conversation.”
She completed her post with a message of pride about her natural hair today. “Now here I am today – no extensions – no clip-ins – no wigs – no chemicals – all me,” she wrote. “First off I just want to say that I’ve been reading your comments on my last post and I want to thank you for all of your kind & supportive words,” she captioned a photo of herself sporting long, blond strands.
“It really means a lot. it’s not easy opening up and being true and vulnerable about certain things, especially in this day and age. not gonna lie… you guys can be BRUTAL lol. but in that, I have developed a thick skin.
“I am forever grateful to have this platform to inspire and encourage u all,” she continued. “hopefully one day I will have the courage to share my FULL story with you. nothing but love for u on my side.”
Gabby Douglas Movie
Douglas is featured in the movie The Gabby Douglas Story which is a movie about her life. Gymnast Gabby Douglas (Imani Hakim) makes personal sacrifices to train with coach Liang Chow (Brian Tee) and become an Olympic champion in 2012.
Gabby Douglas At The Olympics
At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Douglas became both the first American to claim gold medals in the team and individual all-around events as well as the first African American to win the all-around title.
Douglas moved into the home of Missy Parton in West Des Moines, Iowa at age 14, to train under Liang Chow, the former coach of the year 2007 World Champion and the year 2008 Summer Olympics gold medalist Shawn Johnson.
Although Douglas’ former coach, Walker, stated in the year 2012 that she was convinced Douglas could have made it to the Olympics if she had remained in Virginia Beach, Douglas said, “Something clicked in my head that said, if I really want to make this happen I need to get better coaching.”
Gabby Douglas Retired
U.S. gymnast Gabby Douglas was the star of the 2012 London games, becoming the first African American gymnast to ever win gold in both the team and individual all-around at the same Olympics. But, in 2016, Douglas’ Olympic experience didn’t go as smoothly in Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately, she failed to qualify for the individual all-around competition and then finished seventh overall in the uneven bars final.
To add to this, she was also criticized on social media for not placing her hand over her heart during the playing of the U.S. national anthem and later for not appearing to support her teammates Simon Biles and Aly Raisman during their all-around final events.
Douglas stated…” I have no regrets coming back for a second Olympic team,” she said after the uneven bars final. “It’s been an amazing experience. It’s been teaching me a lot.”
Douglas walked away from Rio with a gold for the team all-around event for the second time in a row. Since gymnasts typically retire young, Douglas is not expected to return to the Tokyo games in 2020.
Unfortunately, I also believe it is true the Douglas will not return to the 2020 Olympics. Sometimes gymnasts that train at the Olympic level get burnt out, resulting in them only being able to compete in one or two Olympic games. I do believe Douglas was burnt out in the 2016 games, so its highly unlikely she will be returning to the 2020 games in Tokyo. What do you guys believe? Do you agree that Douglas is officially retired and not returning to try and make the 2020 Olympics?
