Collins is an accomplished poet who currently serves as a teacher in the MFA program at Stony Brook Southampton. He is vastly recognized as a Literary Lion of the New York Public Library in 1992.

Most noteworthy, Billy is well known for his appointment as Poet Laureate of the United States during the 2001 – 2003 period. It is known that he has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation.

In addition, he received this from the New York Foundation for the Arts and has taught at Columbia University, Sarah Lawrence, and Lehman College, City University of New York, where he is a Distinguished Professor.

In addition to this, Collins is also Senior Distinguished Fellow of the Winter Park Institute in Florida, and a faculty member at the State University of New York-Stonybrook. In 2002, as US poet laureate, Collins was asked to write a poem and the reading was in front of a joint session of Congress held outside of Washington, DC.

The poem was to commemorate the first anniversary of the fall of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on September 11.
