Reggie was driving home from a party in Austin when he was still an 18-year-old Lake Travis High School student, and he had been drinking. His SUV hit the car carrying Jacqueline and her friends along with RM 2222, as it rounded a bend, killing Bennett, who was on the wheel as well as Laura Guerrero, a 20-year-old UT student.
A couple of passengers were also pulled from the wreckage when the car burst into flames, but Jacqueline was trapped in the front passenger seat. She was in the burning vehicle for close to a minute before the paramedics on the scene could dowse the flames. As a result, she suffered horrific burns that covered much of her body and spent months in a burn unit in Galveston.
Jacqueline lost her lips, nose, and ears, despite emergency surgeries and skin grafts. Her eyes were also sewn shut to prevent them from drying out, and her fingers were amputated. Her father ultimately ended up becoming her caregiver.
Stephen was in June 2001, found guilty of two counts of intoxication manslaughter. The judge sentenced him to seven years in prison. During his trial, Jacqueline had asked to meet with him, and once she did, she told him that she had forgiven him.
He managed to complete his sentence and was released in June 2008. He worked with Jacqueline during his prison time, on the very campaign she became synonymous with TxDOT, filming PSAs and speaking at high schools.
Jaqueline Saburido ended up becoming the face of numerous campaigns against drunk driving after she was burnt in a crash in September 1999 near Austin, Texas.
When she got into the accident, she had taken a break from classes at a university in Caracas, Venezuela to study English in Texas. Little did she know that she had taken a decision that would dramatically change her life.
The American-Statesman published ‘Chasing Hope,’ in May 2002, which told Saburido’s harrowing story. The story was later distributed to high school students throughout the state. ‘I thought she was the bravest, most courageous person I have ever met,’ stated Janet Lea, the former senior vice president of the Sherry Matthews Group that organized the anti-drunk driving campaign for the Texas Department of Transportation.
Her advocacy, over time, began to reach an international audience, and she was featured in safety campaigns in countries around the world, reaching as far as Australia. Speaking in a press conference, she once said: ‘Even if it means sitting here in front of a camera with no ears, no nose, no eyebrows, no hair, I’ll do this a thousand times if it will help someone make a wise decision,’ according to KVUE.
