Otis Redding Plane Crash

On December 10, 1967, Redding and his Bar-Kays bandmates were tragically killed in a plane crash involving Redding’s Beechcraft H18 aeroplane. While flying to the Factory nightclub in Madison, Wisconsin, the aircraft crashed into Lake Monona, seconds after the pilot, Richard Fraser, asked permission to land.

Despite warnings of poor weather with heavy rain and fog, the plane took off. The only survivor, Ben Cauley, was sleeping before the aggressive landing. He woke up just to hear bandmate Phalon Jones, who was looking out a window, exclaim, “Oh, no!”

Ben Cauley unbuckled his seat belt which explains why he was found in frigid water on a seat cushion to keep afloat. He was unable to rescue the others as he did not know how to swim. The other victims of the crash include Jimmy King, Ronnie Caldwell, Carl Cunningham, and Matthew Kelly.

Otis Redding Death

The late singer-songwriter was born Otis Ray Redding Jr. on September 9, 1941, in Dawson, Georgia, United States of America. He later died on December 10, 1967, in Madison, Wisconsin on the spot of a plane crash. Thus, he died at the age of 26.

Redding’s body was recovered the next day after the crash. His funeral was held on December 18, 1967 at the City Auditorium in Macon. He was entombed at his ranch in Round Oak after Jerry Wexler delivered the eulogy.

Redding passed away just 3 days after re-recording The Dock of the Bay. He is survived by his wife, Zelma Atwood, and four children.

Three decades after his death, Redding’s memorial plaque was placed on the lakeside deck of the Madison convention center referred to as Monona Terrace.

The Dock of the Bay

By the time Otis Redding wrote “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay”, he was ambitious to finally record a number-one hit. Even though he finally succeeded in his goal with this song, hitting number one on the Billboard charts in March 1968, Redding never got to know how successful this song became.

(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” was recorded shortly before he, along with four members of his backing band, his assistant as well as the pilot were killed in a plane crash on the 10th of December 1967. Only one person survived the crash. While Redding’s body wasn’t even found yet, co-writer Steve Cropper was forced to go back into the studio by their record label to release something.

A small month after Redding’s death, “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” was released, and quickly climbed the charts. It became the first posthumous number one hit in the United States’ music chart history. The song even won awards, such as two Grammys for Best R&B Song and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
