Jim Castillo Early Life

Castillo was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. He had an interest in sports while growing though his passion for weather was triggered by the 1980 F – 3 tornado struck in his neighborhood.

However, Jim began his journalism career as an intern for the National Weather Service in Jefferson City, while he was still a college student. Additionally, he interned in the weather department at KOMU-TV, in Columbia, MO, eventually leading to his first on-air position as a weather anchor. It was at KOMU that he earned the nickname, “Beefcake“. Moreover, after 7 years of leaving the University, Jim joined KCPQ in December 1997. KCPQ is a Tribune Company-owned station located in Seattle, WA. It was at this station that he won his first Emmy Award for Best Weather in the Pacific Northwest in 1999. Immediately after leaving KCPQ in Dec 2000, Castillo joined KCBS TV which is a CBS Network affiliate. At KCBS, she worked as the chief reporting on the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. He worked at KCBS for one year and 10 months. Additionally, he has served as the chief evening meteorologist at WNYW-TV Fox 5 station located in New York City. His three years of exemplary work at WNYW gained him numerous Emmy award nominations including a regional Emmy Award win.
