Kennedy was born on April 11, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, United States to businessman George Skakel (father) and his former secretary Ann Brannack (mother). She grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut with her 6 siblings Kennedy’s nephew is Ciarán Cuffe, an Irish politician who serves as a Member of the European Parliament.
Kennedy went to all-girls Greenwich Academy in Greenwich and graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan in 1945. In September 1945, Kennedy enrolled at Manhattanville College, where she was a classmate of her future sister-in-law Jean Kennedy, and graduated with a BA degree.
Kennedy became famous for the tragedy that helped define her life, including the deaths of 2 of her 11 kids and the assassination of her husband, Robert F. Kennedy.
Kennedy was born and raised by her parents, a businessman George Skakel and her father’s one-time secretary Ann Brannack. Her parents lost their lives in a 1955 plane crash. Kennedy was the Skakels’ third born of four daughters and sixth born child of seven children.
Kennedy’s mother, Ann was a Catholic of Irish ancestry while her father, George was a Protestant of Dutch descent and he was the founder of Great Lakes Carbon Corporation, currently known as a division of SGLCarbon.
Kennedy has six siblings; two sisters namely; Patricia (1925–2000), and Ann (b. 1933), and four brothers namely; Georgeann (1918–1983), James (1921–1998), George Jr. (1922–1966), and Rushton (1923–2003).
Kennedy is the widow of U.S. senator Robert F. Kennedy. She first met her late spouse during a ski trip to Mont Tremblant Resort in Quebec in December 1945. During this trip, Robert started dating Kennedy’s elder sister, Patricia. After that relationship ended, he started dating Ethel.
Moreover, Kennedy campaigned for Robert’s older brother John F. Kennedy in his 1946 campaign for the United States Congress in Boston. She also wrote her college thesis on his book Why England Slept. After dating for a while, they got engaged in February 1950 and had their wedding on June 17, 1950, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenwich, Connecticut.
During the 1950s, Robert worked for the government in investigatory roles for the US Senate. They purchased Hickory Hill, an estate in McLean, Virginia, from Robert’s brother John and his partner, Jacqueline. Their union was blessed with eleven children.
Robert F. Kennedy was mortally injured soon after midnight on June 5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, by Sirhan Sirhan, a Palestinian with Jordanian citizenship. Sadly, Robert was pronounced dead at 1:44 a.m. PDT on June 6, 1968. Following Robert’s death, U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a national day of mourning. After her husband’s assassination, Kennedy openly stated that she would never remarry.

Michael LeMoyne Kennedy (February 27, 1958 – December 31, 1997); Mary Kerry Kennedy (September 8, 1959); Christopher George Kennedy (July 4, 1963); Matthew Maxwell Taylor Kennedy (January 11, 1965); Douglas Harriman Kennedy (March 24, 1967); and Rory Kennedy Bailey (December 12, 1968).
