McLean was born on November 14, 1929, in Normal, Illinois, in the United States as Edgar McLean Stevenson Jr. He attended Lake Forest Academy and later joined the United States Navy, serving as a hospital corpsman.

After his service, McLean attended Northwestern University, where McLean was a Phi Gamma Delta fraternity brother, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in theater arts, afterward, McLean worked at a radio station, played a clown on a live TV show in Dallas, became an assistant athletic director at Northwestern, and sold medical supplies as well as insurance.

Rise to Fame

McLean is best known for his role as Lt. Colonel Henry Blake in the television series MAS*H, which earned McLean a Golden Globe Award in 1974.

McLean also appeared on several television series, notably The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Doris Day Show.

After a guest appearance on That Girl (1966) with Marlo Thomas, he was signed to a regular role on The Doris Day Show (1968) in 1969.
