He went to Stanford University, where he grew interested in drama during his second year. In 1972, Danson transferred to Carnegie-Mellon University, which was once known as Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh.

His breakout movie part was as Jack Holden in the movies Three Men and a Baby (1987) and Three Men and a Little Lady (1990).
