Merton was born July 9, 1957, in Parsons Green, London, United Kingdom to Albert Martin (father), and Mary Ann Power (mother). Merton lived in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham until 8 years old. He attended St Teresa’s, Morden, and St Thomas’s School, Fulham.
Merton then proceeded to Wimbledon College, a Jesuit-run secondary school that was once a grammar school and had just become a comprehensive. He passed A-levels in English and History.
