Early Life and Education
Learned was born on 9 April 1939, in Washington D.C., United States. She is the eldest daughter of Bruce Learned, a diplomat, and Elizabeth Duane “Betti” (née Hooper). Her maternal grandfather was an attaché for the United States Embassy in Rome. She was raised alongside her five younger sisters: Susan, Sabra, Dorit, Philippa, and Gretl.
However, when she was 11, Learned transferred to Austria, where her father performed for the U.S. State Department. At this time, she attended Arts Educational School, Tring, currently Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in Tring, Hertfordshire, England. During this time, she found the theater and chose to create acting her life’s work.
Rise to Fame
Learned earned fame when she emerged in an ACT production of Noël Coward’s “Private Lives”, where she was spotted by producer Lee Rich, who cast her as Olivia Walton in his new television series about a Depression-era family, The Waltons (1972).
