Stephen Spagnuolo Coaching philosophy
Spagnuolo learned under Philadelphia coach Jim Johnson and shares the same aggressive, blitz-heavy approach as his mentor. Spagnuolo uses a 4–3 base defense with a heavy emphasis on multiple blitz packages, including corner and safety blitzes.
While defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, he often used a smaller defensive line, with three or even four defensive ends to further pressure the quarterback.
This philosophy proved successful, with the Giants leading the NFL in sacks in 2007. During Super Bowl XLII, Spagnuolo’s defense sacked Tom Brady five times, the most times he had been sacked in any game that season.

Stephen Spagnuolo is an American football coach who has an estimated net worth of $ 6 million as of 2019. New York Giants made Spagnuolo one of the highest-paid defensive coordinators in the NFL with a new three-year contract, worth roughly $2 million a year.
Steve Spagnuolo Keeps the faith
Faith is an important component of Spagnuolo’s life. Faith formed much of the foundation of his marriage to wife Maria. Faith is the fabric that holds everything together, including his positive coaching philosophy. “Faith is huge to me,” Spagnuolo said. “There is no conceivable way that I should be sitting where I am. There’s only one reason that I’m here, it’s because God wanted me here.”
And to understand why Spagnuolo considers it something of a miracle to be sitting there in his office on this gray Saturday, preparing for the Giants, you have to go back to a warm summer night in 1980, when he was 20. It was July 8, the evening of the annual MLB All-Star Game. Spagnuolo, living in Grafton, Mass., made plans to go watch the game with his best friends Richie Vacca, Jackie Herbst, and Craig LeClaire at a local hangout.
At the family dinner table, Steve’s mom, Carol Spagnuolo, asked him to reconsider. Her father his Grandpa Leo wanted to come over and watch the game with Steve. Spagnuolo initially resisted. But he remembered a conversation with his girlfriend after the death of her grandfather. She told Steve to appreciate opportunities to be with Grandpa Leo while he still had the chance. And so the young Spags called his friends, told them to go on without him. He stayed home to watch the All-Star Game with Grandpa Leo.

Steve Spagnuolo Hired as Chiefs DC After Bob Sutton’s Firing
Steve Spagnuolo was announced by The Kansas City Chiefs to be their new defensive coordinator. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo first reported the hire. The Kansas City Chiefs began looking for a new coach to lead their defense after Bob Sutton was fired on Jan. 22. The three-time defending AFC West champions struggled on that side of the ball in 2018, finishing 24th in points allowed (26.3 per game) and 31st in yards allowed (405.5).
One common criticism levied at Sutton is he routinely failed to make adjustments during games, opting to stick to his formula even when opponents were able to move the ball with ease. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Spagnuolo emerged as a favorite for the job in part of his relationship with Andy Reid.
Steve Spagnuolo worked as an assistant defense in several capacities for eight seasons under the Chiefs head coach with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999 through 2006. After the 2011 season, Reid told reporters he tried to bring Spagnuolo back to the Eagles in an unspecified role.
Spagnuolo started coming off with a three year season run as head coach of the St. Louis Rams in which he went 10-38. He wound up taking over as defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints in 2012. He followed that up by working as a defensive coach for the Baltimore Ravens (2013-14) and defensive coordinator for the New York Giants (2015-17).
The hiring of Spagnuolo will likely force the Chiefs to alter their defensive roster. He primarily utilizes a 4-3 base, compared to the 3-4 scheme used by Sutton. After 2018 take off, Spagnuolo returned to the NFL with one of the best situations possible. The Kansas City proved in their last season to be successful with a suspect defense that it came through within the overtime of the AFC Championship Game before losing to the New England Patriots.
As long as Spagnuolo puts together a scheme that maximizes the talent he has and adjusts his plan during games if opponents seem to have them figured out, the Chiefs will be in a much better position to have a defense that contains teams long enough to let Reid’s high-powered offense light up the scoreboard.
