Early Life and Education

Rowell was born on May 10, 1959, in Portland, Maine, United States to her father Wilson, and her mother Dorothy Rowell. When she was 16 days old, Rowell, along with her two sisters, Lori and Sheree, were surrendered to child services.

Rowell grew up on a 60-acre working farm in Maine with foster parents Agatha C. and Robert Armstead, and learned classical ballet from a book. Rowell finally turned professional and performed with ABT (American Ballet Theater) II and other professional ballet groups.

Rise to Fame

Rowell rose to fame in 1990, after she was cast as Drucilla Barber, a street urchin-turned-ballet dancer on the CBS daytime soap opera, The Young and the Restless. Rowell became a fan dearest and was nominated for three Daytime Emmy Awards in 1996, 1997, and 1998. She won 11 NAACP Image Awards for her characterization of Drucilla.

Rowell was born in Portland, Maine, United States as the daughter of her father Wilson, and her mother Dorothy Mabel Collins Rowell. Her birth father was of Jamaican descent, and her mother was of English descent and a Mayflower descendant. Rowell knew very little regarding her biological father.

Rowell’s mother, suffered from schizophrenia before giving birth to her, leaving Rowell’s brother and two small sisters unsupervised. She was later adopted by her foster parents Agatha C. and Robert Armstead.

In an interview, Rowell disclosed that she was abused while at her foster home though her foster mother Agatha always encouraged her together with her sister to write to their biological mother and also motivated their ambitions.

Rowell’s biological mother, Dorothy Mabel Collins Rowell, suffered from schizophrenia and passed away in September 1983 from lung cancer. Dorothy was housed at Maine Insane Hospital in Maine where she spent portions of her adult life. In 1999 Rowell made a trip to the asylum so that she could relive her mother’s memory.
