Cortopassi was born in 1967 in Southland, Chicago, United States. He grew up watching WGN’s Ray Rayner and Bozo’s Circus. At the age of 6, he lost his older brother in a swimming pool accident. Cortopassi went to Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, where he stated there was a strong priority on writing.

Cortopassi then enrolled at what was then Thornton Community College, currently South Suburban College in South Holland, which reinforced his interests in the humanities and writing. Cortopassi later visited WBBM-TV in the mid-’80s which sealed the deal on broadcast. There he covered everything from features to government boards, making $25 a story in the early ’90s.

Cortopassi rose to fame as a winner of multiple Emmy and Associated Press awards for his time in Indianapolis. Cortopassi’s popularity rose in September of 2020, after he joined the WGN News team as co-anchor of WGN Evening News, WGN News at Nine, as well as WGN News at Ten.
