Thomas F Wilson Interview
Tom Wilson On His Reluctance To Appear At Back To The Future Events
Actor Thomas Wilson is one of the many reasons the Back to the Future trilogy works as well as it does. Playing every iteration of the antagonistic Tannen family in the film series, he set a standard for cinematic bullies in the 1980s.
In a rare interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wilson said Biff, the principle Tannen character, was distillation of the bullies he encountered growing up. “I knew very well how they operate, and specifically the joy they take in scaring people,” he said. “I’d stared them in the face so often that it wasn’t particularly challenging to do an impression.” To mold the impression into a character, however, was harder for Wilson than it would seem on screen. “Underneath the tsunami of pop iconography is a performance of a difficult role that I worked very hard on, and I’m very proud of,” he said.
He also admits to a certain discomfort with the fame the character brought him. He considers himself a better actor than a “legendary icon.” He also added, “I’m also working very frequently and am unavailable to appear at events.” He is not part of the celebrations occurring around Southern California over the next few days, for example.
Despite the discomfort and a set of questions asked so frequently, he wrote a song about it, Wilson said he is “gratified” when fans approach him. He is also glad the series continues to endure in people’s hearts.
