Straight from college, David plunged into his career as a lawyer taking his first job at a large national firm in Washington D.C. From here, he proceeded on to serve as a law clerk for the Honourable Truman M. Hobbs, chief judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama for a period of one year.

This experience pushed him to pursue a career as a trial lawyer, establishing his own law firm Schoen Law firm in Montgomery, Alabama, and immediately began trying cases and arguing appeals in cases. He initially began practicing as a criminal defense lawyer and civil rights work. He was quite successful boasting a number of wins in most of the cases that he took. His popularity rose immensely as he started his defense practice in Alabama to Michigan, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, West Virginia, South Carolina, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and elsewhere, with a heavy concentration in New York City.

David also acted as an adjunct professor in the fields of Criminal Procedure, Trial Skills, and the First Amendment. Moreover, he has lectured widely in continuing legal education programs in fields such as Legal Ethics, Civil Rights Litigation, litigation under the Anti-Terrorism Act, and Evidence. His hard work for the past 30 years, has gained him various honors including the American Bar Association with its national pro bono public award 1995. In 2015, he got honored by Honorable David S.
