Patty was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, into a family of musicians; her father was a minister of music, whereas her mother operated as the church pianist. She first acted at the age of two when she sang “Jesus Loves Me” for her church, Phoenix First Church of God. First growing up in Phoenix, then San Diego, she and her brothers joined their parents in a performing group known as “The Ron Patty Family”, and sang at churches nationwide during summer holidays.
After graduating from Crawford High School in San Diego, she proceeded to San Diego State University and Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana, where she learned voice with soprano Greta Dominic though graduated with a focus on conducting. While studying at Anderson University, she operated as a studio musician for area recording studios, singing background vocals and recording commercial jingles, including one for Juicy Fruit gum.
Her prominence as a performer and studio singer grew during the late 1970s, and it was during this time that she started contact with legendary Christian musician Bill Gaither.

- Smith was surrounded by music while growing up. Her stepfather and her brother played mandolin and fiddle respectively, her other brother was a guitarist. Smith would listen to the Grand Ole Opry radio broadcast every Saturday night. While Smith was a teenager, she was involved in a lawnmower accident, which nearly sliced her leg off.
- While recovering in the hospital, she was gifted a guitar which she eventually learned to play. Smith began to perform in various local talent contests straight after she was discharged. Smith graduated from Salem-Liberty High School in 1959 as the class salutatorian.
- Smith registered to perform in a talent contest at the Frontier Ranch country music park near Columbus, Ohio. She sang Jean Shepard’s “I Thought of You”, Smith won the contest and five silver dollars. The same day, country artist Bill Anderson heard Smith’s performance and he was impressed by her voice.
- Smith ran into Anderson again in January 1964 at a country music package concert, where he invited her to perform together on Ernest Tubb’s Midnite Jamboree program in Nashville, Tennessee. After that performance, Smith returned to Nashville that May to do some demo recording by Anderson that he planned on pitching to other country singers. Hubert Long, Anderson’s manager brought the demo recording to RCA Victor Records, where producer Chet Atkins heard it. He was also impressed by her vocals, Atkins offered Smith a recording contract that eventually materialized on June 24, 1964.

Education and Music Beginning
Randy dropped out of high school while he was in the ninth grade, however, he went back and later graduated from Fort Payne High in 1969. After graduating from Fort Payne, he went to Jacksonville State University.
In the late 60s, Owen and his cousin, Teddy Gentry, began playing music together. They recruited another cousin, Jeff Cook, to form a band, which they named Wild country. Their debut public performance was at a high school talent show, which they won.
When he graduated from Jacksonville State University, the three cousins relocated into an apartment in Anniston, Alabama and by 1973, they were pursuing a full-time music career. For more than 2 decades, Randy was the frontman and the lead vocalist of one of the most prolific bands in the history of music.
The band now called Alabama, signed a recording deal with RCA Records in 1980 and in May 2002, the band announced their music retirement during the Academy of Country Music Awards telecast. For the remainder of 2002 and 2003, they did shows throughout the country in their American Farewell Tour.
Randy and the Alabama Band mates received Country Music’s highest honor in November 2005, being inducted into The Country Music Hall of Fame. The Eagles, Anne Murray, and Ronnie Milsap.
Before and throughout his early music career, Randy got jobs for laying brick, painting, farming, and hanging sheetrock. He says his long-range goals are “To help my family achieve a gentle way of living and to be known as friendly to the fans and have a good reputation with fellow musicians.”
